Agholor in the backfield

When the end-of-spring depth chart was released by Lane Kiffin earlier this week, incoming freshman Nelson Agholor was listed at both running back and wide receiver.

Kiffin had originally designated Agholor as an “offensive” recruit who could play either spot –- and that still is possible -- but right now it’s looking more and more as if Agholor will begin his USC career as a tailback.

“One thing we don’t want is for Nelson to be spread out,” Kiffin said. “We probably wouldn’t be putting him at tailback if it wasn’t for the injury to Tre (Madden) but we need to find some production in the passing game out of the running back position.”

Agholor is certainly someone who can fit that bill. He’s an explosive playmaker and a smooth receiver who runs precise routes. He’s also made it clear that he would prefer to be at tailback in fall camp, so the Trojans get to fill a need and give a player his first wish as well.

Kiffin said he is encouraged by what he sees from Agholor in terms of the mental ability to handle the transition to college and contribute right away as a freshman.

“Nelson is very similar to Robert (Woods) in that they are very mature for that age,” Kiffin said. “Nelson has a great love for the playbook, and we saw that from Robert too.”
