Former USC athletic director Mike Garrett is expected to be announced on Thursday as the new athletic director at Langston University, an NAIA school in Oklahoma, according to a report in The Oklahoman.
Garrett was a Heisman Trophy winning tailback for the Trojans in 1965 and later won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was named USC athletic director in 1993 and served for 17 years before being removed in 2010 following severe NCAA sanctions handed down in the Reggie Bush/O.J. Mayo case.
Garrett has been largely out of the public eye since leaving USC. He is a very proud man who was devoted to the university and was roundly criticized for his handling of the NCAA investigation. In an ironic twist, one of his final acts as USC athletic director was to hire Lane Kiffin, a move that was questioned by most but looks pretty good right now as the Trojans are ranked No. 1 in several preseason polls heading into the season.
The Langston University Lions are the alma mater of former NFL linebacker Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson.
