Storylines from Tuesday practice

The Trojans went through a full pads session Tuesday morning amid some mild rain. The team did a lot of red zone work, both in 7-on-7 and team drills, in an effort to shore up that area of the defense. Coach Lane Kiffin said they focused on position groups and fundamentals today, as well.

"It's nice to slow down and do stuff to get better, rather than worrying about preparing for an opponent," Kiffin said.

Among the players who looked good today with increased reps were Max Wittek, Xavier Grimble, Dillon Baxter and George Farmer.

"We threw George in there at tailback and he did some special things, but then he got banged up and missed the rest of the day," Kiffin said.

Marqise Lee had an impressive grab in the end zone over Anthony Brown.

Kiffin talked about the rotation of the defensive linemen.

"Back when we were here before, the D-linemen could play the whole game," he said. "One reason is because we played more I-formation teams, so the linemen didn't have to cover as much space. Now the teams are all spread out, and that affects the linemen. Also, we got a lot more three-and-outs back in those days, and that helped keep guys fresh."

Matt Barkley commented on winning Pac-12 Player of the Week for the second time this year.

"It tells me that we're winning," he said. "It's not just an award for me; it's a comment on the entire team."

The Trojans will be back on the practice field Wednesday morning.
