Johnny Stanton just wins football games.
With Santa Margarita trailing 37-36, Stanton dove in from 1 yard out with 16 seconds left to give the Eagles the 42-37 victory and a state championship win over San Jose Bellarmine. It was a similar script for Stanton as last weekend, when he scored the winning touchdown against San Clemente in the Pac-5 championship game with one minute remaining. Against Bellarmine, Stanton got it done on the ground as well as through the air, completing 14 of 25 passes for 306 yards.
It is going to be very interesting to watch Stanton's recruitment next season. There are those who believe he could have a better shot at ending up on a big-time FBS roster as a safety or linebacker, but Stanton wants to continue playing quarterback, and games such as Friday night are starting to show that he might be able to do just that.
