Monrovia (Calif.) defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy has set up his first official visit and has a handful of schools he’s looking at.
McCarthy, the No. 6 rated DT in the nation as well as the No. 52 player overall in the ESPNU 150, will head to Oregon next week to check out the Ducks.
“We have a Thursday game, so it works out well,” said McCarthy’s father, Ed. “I just found out about this visit in the last day or so, our coach set it up so I’m trying to make plans to get out there as well.
“Right now, Ellis is just enjoying playing football and isn’t thinking that much about the recruiting process. Reporters always ask him for a top five or six and he’ll give out some names, but Ellis pretty much keeps to himself what he’s really thinking. I think it’s going to take a lot for anyone to beat out USC or UCLA, but that’s what these visits will be about.”
In addition to the Ducks, McCarthy will likely take visits to Cal, Florida and Washington.
“USC and UCLA are recruiting him the hardest,” Ed said. “USC has been on him real hard since last spring, and UCLA has really picked it up, with their whole staff calling Ellis when they can.
“I think the rest of his trips will be after the season but you never know. Honestly, I didn’t know he would be taking the Oregon visit next week, so for all I know, he could take the others during the season as well.”
