The Trojans hit the field for the opening session of spring ball and WeAreSC was there to provide a practice diary for USC fans to follow the action.
3:37 p.m. -- Matt Barkley enters the practice field.
3:42 p.m. -- Lane Kiffin enters the practice field and immediately says hello to Allan and Betty Graf, parents of left tackle Kevin Graf.
3:45 p.m. -- Robert Woods begins going through light warm-ups. It’s unclear at this point if Woods will practice or not.
3:52 p.m. -- Marqise Lee makes a diving catch during a warm-up drill -- good to see that Lee is picking right up where he left off in the fall.
4:01 p.m. -- New defensive back coach Marvin Sanders leads a “turn and run” drill for defensive players to work on technique.
4:06 p.m. -- Team warm-ups begin and the music is cranked up on the loudspeakers.
4:15 p.m. -- Khaled Holmes comes to the center of the field to lead the team in a “Trojans” chant before the players head to their drills.
4:18 p.m. -- Special teams drills begin. Peter McBride looks sharp snapping the ball.
4:35 p.m. -- The team breaks off into offensive and defensive walk-throughs. Nice to see Abe Markowitz on the field, he’s battled foot injuries over the past two years and is lining up today as the No. 2 center.
4:36 p.m. -- The offensive team does a set of “up-downs” after messing up a play call.
4:51 p.m. -- The team goes into position drills. Junior Pomee sure looks big in the upper body, the tight end group is solid even though Christian Thomas (who is dressed in uniform) is still being held out of drills due to injury.
5:01 p.m. -- Each position group pairs up with a position group from the other side of the ball for various drills. The RB’s and LB’s goes against each other on pass routes, the OL/DL do pass rush drills, the TE’s and safeties also work on coverages.
5:10 p.m. -- The whole team comes together on Brian Kennedy Field. The first play is a run from Curtis McNeal that is stopped in the backfield by Lamar Dawson. Dion Bailey later makes a terrific play when he bats down a Cody Kessler pass that was intended for Lee.
5:21 p.m. -- The OL and DL stay on BK Field while the skill players move to Howard Jones Field for some 7-on-7 work. The best play of the drill comes from George Farmer, who goes up to catch a 40-yard pass from Barkley against good coverage from Isiah Wiley. Max Wittek hits his former high school teammate Victor Blackwell with a deep pass down the seam while their high school coach Bruce Rollinson (a former USC wide receiver) looks on from the sidelines. Wiley and Jawanza Starling collide after going up for a pass intended for Farmer, but both are OK. Lee put a nice move on Anthony Brown after catching the ball, turning Brown around and allowing Lee to gain extra yardage.
5:42 -- The final team drill session of the day begins. Bailey came in on a blitz and leaped up to knock down a Barkley pass attempt. J.R. Tavai had a tackle for loss on McNeal. Brian Baucham, who hasn’t made much noise on the practice field in a long time, makes a nice pass break-up of a throw intended for Farmer. Farmer came right back with a deep post reception from Wittek. Drew McAllister had an interception off Wittek. Soma Vainuku made the play of the day when Barkley led him on a pass down the left sideline and Vainuku had to leap the make the grab (to give full disclosure, McAllister was there for a big hit if it was a game situation in pads). Barkley tried to hit Farmer, but Wiley made the interception.
6:15 p.m. -- The team drill session ended and the players began some post-practice conditioning.
6:20 p.m. -- Practice is over.
