2014 RB Joe Mixon hits stride

Joe Mixon feels like he is “peaking at the right time.”

The 6-foot-1, 191-pound running back (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) is playing with plenty of confidence as he prepares to lead Freedom into the playoffs next week against Berkeley (Calif.)

“The season is going really good, just grinding out, trying to go crazy,” Mixon said.

Through 10 games this season, the 2014 prospect has piled up 1,192 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. He posted performances of 188 yards and four touchdowns during a win over Castro Valley (Calif.) and 142 yards and two scores to help Freedom beat Antioch (Calif.).

“My offensive game has just been going crazy," he said. "Nobody can stop me.”

In the Falcons’ last game, a 41-0 win over Brentwood (Calif.) Liberty, he rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and returned an interception 68 yards for a score.

While Mixon has been stringing together impressive performances, he said he is receiving interest from Nebraska, Boise State, Cal, Washington and UCLA. But, right now, his only offer is from Oregon State.

“Everything is going good,” he said. “It’s been a slow time right now, because the season still isn’t over, but I think it’s going to pick up after it ends.”

With his teammate and good friend Darrell Daniels currently committed to Washington, Mixon remains high on the Huskies.

“They’re still up there at the top,” he said.

Mixon took an unofficial visit to Cal for the Golden Bears’ 21-3 loss to Stanford on Oct. 20.

“The game was cool,” he said. “I went there for Cal, because I was on the little recruiting thing, but everything was good. The environment and everything was really cool.”

As Mixon works his way through the recruiting process, he is happy to have Daniels around for support. But the receiver doesn’t try to push his teammate toward the Huskies.

“He’s talked about them, but he just says do what I do, just do what’s best for me,” Mixon said. “He’s just looking out for my interests.”
