BELLEVUE, Wash. -- When asked about landing his first scholarship offer, John Nguyen started to laugh.
“It feels great,” he said. “I finally fit in with the group now.”
The 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue) became the latest member of the nation’s second-ranked program to earn an offer when Montana invited him to join the Grizzlies last week.
While he is excited about the opportunity to play college football in Missoula, Mont., he isn’t in a hurry to commit.
“I’m going to wait and see my other options, but I’m really interested in them,” he said. “It’s a really good school, really good football team. I love the fans there.”
In addition to joining an exclusive group of teammates, Nguyen is the third member of his family to become an elite running back at Bellevue, joining his brothers, Peter and David.
Peter is currently Montana’s leading rusher with 814 yards and four touchdowns on 145 carries. His younger brother now has the chance to follow in his footsteps.
“It’s great to have the chance to go to the same school as my brother,” Nguyen said.
He knows following his brother at Montana would be a daunting task. But he has already done that at Bellevue, so he is ready to do it again if he believes the Grizzlies are the right fit.
“It’s big shoes I’ve got to fill, just like I had to fill my brother’s shoes at Bellevue,” Nguyen said. “It’s a cool challenge for me. It helps push myself even harder just to fill those shoes.”
