Hokies keep Hargrave pipeline going

Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, Va.) has been a feeder program for the Virginia Tech Hokies. Coach James Johnson’s team has three former Hargrave players on the roster this year, and next season that number will rise to four.

ESPN 100 small forward Donte Clark (Charlotte, N.C./Hargrave) committed to the Hokies during his official visit this weekend. To hear Clark tell the story, heading into the weekend, if all checked out well he wasn’t leaving campus without making a commitment.

“I think I pretty much knew I was going to go there,” Clark said. “It was like my third time because I’ve been to a couple of football games.”

Johnson and his first-year staff cracked the code. Clark won’t be visiting Miami in October, or anyone else for that matter. Virginia Tech came at Clark with a game plan that appealed to him.

“They came with a different approach," Clark said. "Most coaches try to force you into the situation. Coach Johnson and his staff sat me down and kept it truthful. They told me what I needed to hear. Plus, I knew coach Johnson before he got the head coaching job.”

Clark is the second Class of 2013 player to pick the Hokies. Center Trevor Thompson (Indianapolis, Ind./St. John’s) committed Sept. 4.
