Jakarr Samson expected to sign late

Depending on how the next 10 days unfold, it will determine the full force of what the spring signing period will entail. However, we know there will be a number of players that remain on the board. One of them is post-graduate small forward Jakarr Sampson (Akron, Ohio/Brewster Academy).

Sampson was part of a vaunted recruiting class that signed with St. John’s last year, however, he didn’t qualify academically which was not out of left field. There were serious questions about his academics well in advance of his arrival. Now he’s back at Brewster Academy to put the finishing touches on his transcript. He’ll also take a spin around the country and take the pulse of his recruiting interest.

“He’s had a ton of people come in and see him in the last month,” Brewster coach Jason Smith said. “Baylor and Providence have been the most aggressive.”

St. John’s, Pittsburgh and Florida also made the trip to see him and will recruit him.

“He wants to be a little more deliberate through the recruiting process,” Smith said.

The early period will come and go and Sampson won’t sign. He’s working on his grades and his game this winter before making a final college decision in the spring. As soon as the dust settles, everyone -- and I mean everyone -- who missed on their first round of combo forwards, will try and get involved; they’ll have to.
