Best available C Robert Upshaw to K-State

The Kansas State Wildcats secured a key pledge from the country’s top remaining center in Robert Upshaw (Fresno, Calif./San Joaquin Memorial) on Monday.

The race to secure a signature from Upshaw grew heated through the fall as Upshaw methodically went about his process and narrowed his choices to the Wildcats, Louisville, Georgetown and Fresno State. He visited each of them.

Kansas State was the choice largely due to the summation of its parts.

“It was everything (I needed),” Upshaw said. “The team chemistry, the coaching, the environment. Everything I was looking for I found at Kansas State.”

The developing big man, ranked No. 49 overall, has one of the most significant frames in high school basketball. Upshaw could wind up looking like the college version of Antonio Davis; he has that type of frame.

Upshaw’s recruitment happened exactly how he said it would. Making an informed, well-thought out decision was paramount to him from the outset. He took command of his recruitment and walked each school through his process. In the end, it played out as scripted aside from Kansas State sneaking up on the pack to lock him up.

“I just narrowed everything down, I was able to see everything clearly like I wanted to see it,” Upshaw said. “I went through the process like I felt like I should have.”

In the end, the quiet but outwardly-confident Upshaw found his match in coach Frank Martin.

“I need to take what he’s going to give me and use it for fire to get to the next level.”
