Indiana's pursuit of Troy Williams pays off

There was a time when the recruitment of Troy Williams (Hampton, Va./Oak Hill Academy) was a two-horse race. North Carolina and Kentucky were the only players in the game, and it didn’t look like Williams would make it to the summer.

After a spring that was up and down on the court, Williams reshuffled his deck. North Carolina stayed the course, Kentucky moved on and a host of new schools moved in. The race for Williams’ signature was once again on, and Ohio State, UNC, Louisville, Arkansas and Alabama were accompanied by Indiana. On Thursday, for the annual Oak Hill-Hargrave scrimmage, one head coach was in the stands: Indiana's Tom Crean. On Sunday, the Hoosiers were rewarded for their pursuit by landing ESPN’s No. 32 overall prospect.

“I’d say they made up ground [in the spring],” Williams said. “After Nike Global and in between Peach Jam they came into the loop. Ever since that they came in strong and that’s when I felt like I could go there.”

Williams visited the Hoosiers at a pivotal time. Crean brought a ton of committed prospects, senior targets and younger recruits in for the Hoosiers' annual Hoosier Hysteria. For Williams, the visit was perfect.

“I really got along well with the recruits,” Williams said. “We had a strong connection in basketball and outside of that. I’ve known [Indiana commit] Stanford Robinson a long time.

“Two days after I went to Hoosier Hysteria, when I left the recruits, I told myself I could see myself playing there. That was it.”

Williams is the highest-rated player in IU’s class. He joins SG Robinson (Fairfax, Va./Findlay Prep), PF Luke Fischer (Germantown, Wis./Germantown), SF Devin Davis (Indianapolis/Warren Central) and SF Collin Hartman (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral).

The Hoosiers now have a player who thrives in the open court, offers up a dose of athleticism and is by everyone’s definition a finisher. The nephew of Boo Williams, an icon on the AAU scene, Troy brings energy and athleticism. He’s also the second ESPN 100 recruit to commit to Indiana this season.
