Box Score Bits: Latos on fire, Chacin cools

&#8226 San Diego Padres right-hander Mat Latos twirled a one-hit shutout Thursday in San Francisco, fanning six Giants in a 1-0 win over Jonathan Sanchez, who also pitched well. Latos is solidifying his place as one of baseball's top young arms, having thrown 17 scoreless innings with three hits and no walks allowed in his past two starts. He's owned in 58.1 percent of ESPN leagues.

&#8226 Another exciting, young right-hander, Colorado Rockies rookie Jhoulys Chacin, allowed his first runs of the season, giving up a Ryan Zimmerman two-run home run in the first inning Thursday, then another Zimmerman home run later. Chacin allowed six runs in five innings to the Washington Nationals, all while being one of fantasy's most-added players. Chacin should be better next time around.

&#8226 Speaking of rookies, Detroit Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch continues to hit for power, as he homered and doubled Thursday against CC Sabathia. Boesch, a lefty hitter, is playing against all pitching at this point, and thriving, with a .368 batting average and 1.068 OPS.

&#8226 Oakland Athletics veteran Ben Sheets pitched well in Texas, allowing one run in six innings. The best sign for fantasy owners was the eight strikeouts, the second consecutive start Sheets did so. While his season WHIP of 1.66 remains inflated, note the 16 whiffs Sheets has in his past two starts matches his total from his first six starts.

&#8226 Baltimore Orioles outfielder Luke Scott entered Thursday hitting .200, but his eighth-inning grand slam against the Seattle Mariners gave him four home runs in May. Scott isn't likely to contend for a batting title, but he is one of baseball's underrated power hitters, with 48 home runs the past two seasons.

&#8226 Thursday was quite a day for the Kansas City Royals, as they changed managers and Zack Greinke finally won, but how about infielder Alberto Callaspo and this surprising power? Callaspo smacked a three-run homer, his sixth of the season. Last year Callaspo hit 11 home runs.
