Sean Newcomb solidifies top-15 status

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- University of Hartford lefty Sean Newcomb is a likely top-15 pick in this draft, certainly a first-rounder, and made his final regular season start last Friday at Stony Brook, a 10 a.m. game that still had about 30 scouts in attendance, including Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik and scouting director Tom McNamara. Newcomb made a strong case to be chosen high, showing three above-average pitches and probably the best command and control he's had all season.

Newcomb's fastball sat 92-94 mph over his seven-inning outing, touching 96, and he threw plenty of strikes -- more control than command, but still better than what he'd shown scouts earlier in the spring.
