2013 role for Matusz

Brian Matusz found a new lease on life pitching out of the Baltimore Orioles' bullpen last season, posting a 1.35 ERA in 18 relief outings as compared to a 5.42 ERA in 16 starts.

The lefthander hasn’t given up on his previous role. At last weekend’s FanFest, Matusz told Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun he is going into spring training with an eye on competing for a rotation spot.

If Matusz is to be a starter, where has struggled for most of his career, he will have to beat out Miguel Gonzalez or Zach Britton, among others, for a back-of-the-rotation spot. Matusz excelled as a lefty specialist last season (.175 OBA vs. southpaws; .327 vs, righties), numbers that manager Buck Showalter will find difficult to ignore.
