Two games in the playoffs so far, and the Boston Red Sox have started two different catchers. So which one is more likely to have his name written on the lineup card for Game 3 -- David Ross or Jarrod Saltalamacchia?
Tampa Bay is going with Alex Cobb, the first right-handed starter they've sent to the mound this series. Typically, Saltalamacchia would tend to get the call against righties, but he has hit just .200 against Cobb, with five strikeouts in 20 at-bats against him. However, Ross has only faced Cobb twice, going hitless in that pair of at-bats and has hit just .125 against right-handers this season.
Clay Buchholz had equal success this season throwing to both Boston backstops. He had a 1.75 ERA and .196 BAA with Saltalamacchia behind the plate, and a 1.73 ERA and .205 BAA with Ross calling the pitches. Given no real preference from the pitcher, expect Salty to get the Game 3 call.
