New favorites for NBA's Rookie of the Year

Today's confirmation that Trey Burke's broken finger will keep him sidelined 8-12 weeks means that one of the early favorites for 2013-14 NBA Rookie of the Year can already be scratched from the list.

Based on what we've seen so far in the preaseason, does that now make Orlando's Victor Oladipo the big favorite? What about Anthony Bennett? Who else could rise up and win the award? Here are the top names to watch and things to consider.

Like always, the key factor to consider is which rookies will get the most opportunity (minutes) to showcase their skills and accumulate stats this season.

Among the 14 lottery picks, only two players are virtually assured starting spots:

  • Michael Carter-Williams -- The No. 11 pick will log plenty of minutes and has the potential to accumulate stats in Philadelphia's new up-tempo offense. The big question is whether he can score enough.
