Why Darren Collison chooses free agency

Los Angeles Clippers backup point guard Darren Collison owns a player option for 2014-15 worth $1.98 million and as expected it will be declined. As a result, he will be a free agent starting on July 1.

From Arash Markazi of ESPNLosAngeles.com: "Collison is opting out of the 2nd year of his 2-year contract, I'm told. He'll test free agency but hopes to stay with the Clippers. Collison wants to stay in L.A. but he certainly played himself into more money and more security than a 1-year, $1.9 million option."

Collison averaged 11.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists as Chris Paul's backup and while re-signing with the Clippers is his preferred choice, this is the best move to find out if he can get a better contract as a free agent.

Teams that might have interest in Collison as a free agent include Charlotte, Golden State, LA Lakers, Milwaukee, New York, Orlando and Sacramento.
