Staying healthy key for Dakari Johnson

Dakari Johnson (New York/Montverde Academy), who has reclassified to the Class of 2013, is on his way back from an injury that kept him out of competition most of the summer. But after watching him this fall at the Florida Fall Festival, it is easy to see he is in better shape and working to build his on-court confidence and increase production.

Johnson has noticeably paid attention to his body. He was more mobile and ran the floor pretty well in Florida and did a great job using his big body to provide passers with a target in the low post. He has good hands and fair low post footwork, but he does have limited lift at this stage of his comeback. I noticed his ability to area rebound more than his scoring acumen throughout the event, but he does like to spin off defenders, power drop-step through contact and put up shots in the paint over his left shoulder. High school-level opponents will find him next to impossible to get around -- doesn't matter if they are in the 2014 or 2013 class -- and he denies the ball in the lane.

Johnson will have an opportunity over the next three or four months to show where he truly stands as a player given Montverde's difficult schedule. Body maintenance and staying healthy will be key for this big fella to play at the high level he is capable of on a consistent basis.
