King of Prussia, Pa. -- While the majority of the grassroots basketball world was beginning to focus its attention on the Southeast corner of the country where Nike and Under Armour will both host their season culminating events this week, the Hoop Group consolidated the rest of the Northeast region’s top teams for its annual Summer Classic East.
The event attracted a plethora of college coaches, all of whom were trying to find some value, and maybe even a sleeper or two, while many of their contemporaries traveled south.
Those coaches who came to see late blooming big man Steve Enoch were disappointed on Wednesday as the 6-foot-10 rising senior opted to shut it down for the rest of the summer after re-aggravating a thigh contusion he has battled for several weeks. Enoch’s recruitment took off this spring as he landed offers from UConn, Memphis, Boston College, Arizona State and Rhode Island among others, along with interest from dozens others. But outside of the local schools, very few of those coaches had actually seen him play before. There was consequently a lot of anticipation going into last week’s Reebok Breakout Camp, where Enoch showed flashes of his undeniable talent but wasn’t able to put it all together until a 29-point performance at The Showdown on Sunday in what now appears to have been his last game of the summer.
As for the guys who were on the court on Wednesday night, here’s who impressed:
