Ricardo Gathers will wait to sign with Baylor

ESPN's Sr. Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep reported on Wednesday that Top 100 forward Ricardo Gathers (LaPlace, La./Riverside Academy) will not sign his letter of intent with Baylor until his family gathers more information on the recent violations discovered by the NCAA.

ESPN.com reported on Monday that the men's basketball program, including head coach Scott Drew, were involved in impermissible phone calls and text messages over a three year period. The NCAA enforcement staff labeled the improprieties as "major violations", mainly because of the frequency with which they occurred.

Gathers' brother Greg Gathers told ESPN.com that Ricardo will wait to ink with the Bears.

"He's not going to sign this week. It's a thing where with everything coming out you want to let the smoke clear. We've talked to Coach Drew and we're confident that Baylor's situation is going to be O.K. As a parent and a big brother we just want to make sure everything is O.K. before we sign the letter of intent.

When asked if Ricardo would consider his home state LSU tigers should he not sign with Baylor, Greg Gathers said they most likely would not.

"Probably not. At this point in time I'd definitely say no. That's an unclear situation. They don't even know who their coach is going to be.

"I'm not going to say no (to decommitting from Baylor) but it would be hard to turn down the situation at Baylor," Gathers added. "As long as they don't receive any post-season sanctions there isn't any reason why he doesn't sign with Baylor."

Telep and ESPN's National Recruiting Director Paul Biancardi will discuss this and other topics as the spring signing period kicks off Wednesday on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m. ET.

UPDATE: The NCAA has accepted Baylor's self-imposed sanctions and will not penalize the program any further. Greg Gathers told ESPN.com that Ricardo will now likely sign but because of the fluidity of the situation does not know when.

"Yeah that definitely changes it," Greg Gathers said. "That's what we were hearing so we were going to wait and see what happens."

Gathers feels strongly his brother will be a Bear.
