Class of 2012 senior center Chris Obekpa (Nigeria/Our Savior New American) finally ended his recruitment on Monday, giving a verbal pledge to join St. John's next season. The ESPN 100 big man announced the news via his Twitter account, writing "Keeping my talent in the MECCA".
Obekpa had narrowed his choices to the Red Storm and Cincinnati but did hold offers from DePaul, Connecticut, Memphis, Providence and Oregon, among others.
He is the sixth signee in head coach Steve Lavin's incoming class, joining small forward Jakarr Sampson (Akron, Ohio/Brewster Academy), shooting guard Felix Balamou (Centereach, N.Y./Our Savior New American), power forward Orlando Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), and small forward Marco Bourgault (St. Malo, France/Monroe College) along with Texas A&M transfer Jamal Branch (Humble, Texas) who will be eligible in December.
Shooting guard Darrick Wood (Washington, D.C./Bridgton Academy) committed to St. John's in April but has yet to sign on with the program.
