Bronx guard gets release from Miami

According to a report in the New York Post, shooting guard Melvin Johnson (Bronx, N.Y./St. Benedict's) has asked for and received a release from the letter of intent he signed with Miami.

The Post confirmed the news via Johnson's mother.

"It was because of circumstances beyond our control," Kizzy Gladden said. Johnson has been cleared through the NCAA's Clearinghouse, she added.

The 6-foot-2 Johnson led St. Benedict's to a 35-3 record as a senior last season and finished at No. 84 in the final ESPN 100 rankings. He chose the Hurricanes in September over Virginia Tech, South Florida, Dayton and Georgetown.
