Melvin Johnson picks VCU

Class of 2012 shooting guard Melvin Johnson (Bronx, N.Y./St. Benedict's Prep) committed to Virginia Commonwealth on Friday night just weeks after gaining a release from the letter of intent he signed with Miami. The New York Post reported the news.

"It's just a relief to be able to start college and begin my journey," Johnson told the paper.

The 6-foot-2 guard made his only visit to VCU following his release. He originally chose the Hurricanes in October over the Rams, South Florida, Georgetown, College of Charleston and Dayton.

Johnson joins an incoming class for head coach Shaka Smart that features small forward Jordan Burgess (Midlothian, Va./Benedictine H.S.), center Justin Tuoyo (Lovejoy, Ga./Lovejoy) and power forward Mo Alie-Cox (Lorton, Va./Middleburg Academy).
