Romulus, Mich., shooting guard E.C. Matthews, the No. 85 overall player in the ESPN 100, has committed to Rhode Island over offers from multiple mid- and high-level programs -- including USC and Missouri.
Danny Hurley and his staff did a very impressive job of evaluating and recruiting a guy who floated somewhat under the national radar until this past spring and summer.
Watching him compete at camps and events, what stood out most was what a good guard he is. He is most comfortable with the ball in his hands, scoring by driving to the basket. At this point in time the 6-foot-4, 180-pound Matthews would be more suited to score then play the point.
Matthews is very coachable and has been well-coached in high school. His size and strength for the backcourt is outstanding, especially when it comes to all aspects of defense. His jumper needs work from distance and he could be sharper with his passes and less turnover-prone.
By way of committee, Hurley and his assistant and brother Bobby Hurley will be great teachers for Matthews to learn how to think and play the game simultaneously.
