Steve Lavin announces incoming class

On Wednesday, St. John's head coach Steve Lavin announced his recruiting class for 2012.

Joining the Red Storm in the fall will be small forward Jakarr Sampson (Akron, Ohio/Brewster Academy), shooting guard Felix Balamou (Conarky, Guinea/Our Savior New American), power forward Orlando Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe C.C.) and small forward Marco Bourgault (St. Malo, France/Monroe C.C.). The Johnnies will also welcome Texas A&M transfer Jamal Branch (Humble, Texas) who will be eligible in December and Harvard transfer Max Hooper (Carmel Valley, Calif.) who must sit out the 2012-13 season.

Lavin's 2012 class comes on the heels of a strong 2011 recruiting class and he has now signed 17 prospects since arriving at St. John's in March of 2010.

"The 2011 recruiting class provided a strong foundation for us to build upon," said Lavin. "The arrival of the 2012 class will add depth, size, firepower and some complementary players that will fit nicely into our system of play. This class continues to move our program forward and will assist in making St. John's competitive on an annual basis. We are pleased that our recruiting efforts over these two years have yielded a strong collective group."

The school did not announce the signing of guard Darrick Wood (Washington D.C./Bridgeton Academy), who re-committed to St. John's in April.
