ESPN 100 PF Kelan Martin (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) committed to the Butler Bulldogs over St. Louis and Texas Tech giving first year head coach Brandon Miller a four-star prospect and the No. 97 overall ranked player in the Class of 2014.
Why he committed: Martin decided to join the Bulldogs because they were in need of a forward that can score and Martin fits the description perfectly. The fit was a natural in terms of academics in addition to Martin feeling most comfortable to Miller. Martin’s family will also have opportunity to see him play in the Big East at an excellent program that is close to home.
What he brings: At 6-foot-6, Martin is a strong and physical power forward that is slightly undersized but is a gifted scorer. He has an excellent face-up mid-range game that includes a smooth pull-up jumper. He can also extend out to the arc and knock down the open 3-pointer when his feet are set. He can finish in the lane through contact as well. Martin is a matchup problem at the power forward position.
How he fits: Martin fits well in the "Butler Way" and Miller can move him around within the offense based on matchups. He will also be a first option in set plays, isolations, pick-and-pop or roll situations. He will provide Butler with a player that is a versatile scorer who is capable getting hot and making scoring plays from different areas on the floor.
Who he reminds us of: Martin's game has some of Sacramento Kings’Chuck Hayes to it in the way he is an undersized power forward. He also reminds us of former Ohio University power forward Jerome Tillman.
How the class is shaping up: In addition to Martin, the Bulldogs have another powerful forward in the fold in three-star Tyler Wideman (Merrillvile, Ind./Lake Central). Wideman will provide and athletic low-post scoring threat that can rebound and finish above the rim. Butler has added strength, scoring, rebounding and toughness with these two power forwards. Expect Butler to also be in the mix with recent UCLA decommit and local ESPN 100 SF Trevon Bluiett (Indianapolis/Park Tudor) who is a big body wing that can score as well.
