Ties to the Tar Heel state proved too strong for Ryan Switzer.
The ESPNU 150 Watch List prospect visited the campus last weekend and announced he committed to North Carolina over Florida State, Penn State and Washington during a morning press conference from his school.
“I was just simply ready and felt at ease with my school,” Switzer stated via text message to ESPN. “The fact that I have family in North Carolina, I felt comfortable with the coaches and that I could have an immediate impact.”
Switzer, who is from Charleston (W.Va.) George Washington, has said North Carolina felt like a second home to him because of family connections there.
He has been a standout in camp settings, winning the skills challenge leading up to the Under Armour All-America Game in January. Switzer was also active on the recruiting trail, having visited several schools he was considering.
However, there is potential for Switzer to bring along good friend and teammate Dustin Crouser to Chapel Hill. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker/fullback has scholarship offers from Wake Forest and UNC-Charlotte but has seen interest in him grow and plans to visit Ohio, West Virginia, Wake Forest and Marshall in the coming weeks.
“We want to go as a package deal,” said Switzer who won't take anymore official visits, other than back to North Carolina, this fall.
“I could definitely see myself playing there someday,” Crouser said. “Especially since Ryan just committed there.”
The package deal is halfway complete.
