PSU names new recruiting coordinator

In the wake of Penn State assistant and recruiting coordinator Mike McQueary going on administrative leave late last week, graduate assistant Bill Kavanuagh has been promoted to a full-time assistant coach and will take over McQueary’s duties as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

“Bill Kavanaugh will head up our recruiting effort,” interim coach Tom Bradley said Tuesday in his first weekly press conference. “With the recruiting period coming up, depending where we are and whether we’re playing in the (Big Ten) championship game or not, we have a plan to go out and recruit.”

Last week, the Penn State coaches held a conference call with its verbal commitments to answer any questions regarding the scandal that has rocked Penn State and led to the firings of its football coach and president and the absence of its athletic director.

“There’s a one-call-a-week rule and we felt that we wanted to make sure they were hearing one voice, that it came out the same way,” Bradley said.

On the conference call was Bradley, the rest of the Penn State staff and acting athletic director Mark Sherburne.

“If there was any questions, we answered those questions as a group so they were sure that everybody was being told the same thing,” Bradley said.

Penn State has 15 verbal commitments after ESPNU 150 offensive tackle Joey O’Connor decommitted last week because of the scandal. Weeks earlier, another four-star offensive lineman J.J. Denman decommitted, but that was before the firing of legendary Nittany Lions coach Joe Paterno.
