Lucas Askew commits to Texas State

Commitment No. 6 is in the books for Texas State, and he comes in the form of a big, hybrid receiver.

Lucas Askew (Big Sandy, Texas/Harmony) gave his verbal pledge to the Bobcats on Tuesday. The 6-foot-6, 207-pound receiver – who is projected to be a flex tight end in college – chose Texas State over offers from Memphis, North Texas, New Mexico and Wyoming.

Askew recently visited the new FBS program and said he was not only a fan of the scenery of San Marcos, Texas, but also head coach Dennis Franchione and the rest of the Bobcat coaching staff. He was recruited by linebackers coach Brad Franchione.

“I really liked the campus and felt a good connection with the coaches,” Askew said. “I wanted to go someplace where I knew I’d get to play. I didn’t care if it was the WAC, Southland Conference or the Sun Belt [Conference], I just wanted to play.”

Texas State, a longtime FCS school, is expected to compete in the WAC for the 2012 season and then move to the Sun Belt Conference in 2013. Askew lines up at receiver and defensive end for Harmony. Offensively, he caught 23 passes for 650 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior.
