Junior college sophomore Jeremy McKnight (Corsicana, Texas/Navarro College) was considered one of the top defensive backs in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. He now will take his talents to the Sun Belt Conference.
McKnight signed with Florida Atlantic before the Christmas weekend. He committed to the Owls after making an official visit to the Boca Raton, Fla., campus the weekend of Dec. 16, and he signed with the Owls on Dec. 22.
A 5-foot-10, 185-pound safety, McKnight chose FAU over an offer from Abilene Christian and major interest from Indiana. Originally from Round Rock, Texas, McKnight was recruited out of high school by Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss and several other schools.
“I like the coaching staff there,” McKnight said. “When I went on my visit, you could tell that these coaches really bonded with the players more on personal level. With the attitude they brought and the attitudes the players have, you could tell they really want to win. It seemed like a good place to be.”
McKnight was a first-team all-SWJCFC selection his sophomore year. He helped Navarro to a 10-2 record, a No. 5 ranking in the final NJCAA poll and a win over New Mexico Military Institute (Roswell, N.M.) in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in Copperas Cove, Texas.
Through the first 11 games, McKnight was one the Bulldogs’ defensive leaders, recording 87 tackles (80 solo), two interceptions and a fumble returned for a touchdown.
