Ra'Shaad Samples accepts UA invite

For Ra’Shaad Samples (Dallas/Skyline), playing in the Under Armour All-American Game is more than a personal accolade. It’s a tradition.

Watching former Skyline players such as Mike Davis and Thomas Johnson play in the game, Samples wanted to follow suit. On Thursday, the 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior got the invite and accepted the opportunity to play in the 2013 game.

“My dad handed me the phone, and they asked me if I wanted to play in the game,” Samples said. “That’s what I’ve been waiting on. It feels good. It’s what I’ve been working so hard for.”

Samples was Skyline’s leading receiver this year – an accomplishment in itself with A&M signee Johnson and Grambling State signee Tray Rabon as a member of the 2011 receiving corps. He caught 65 catches for 1,369 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior and was a leader in every receiving category, including average yards per catch (21).

Samples’ elusiveness and 4.4 speed frustrates defensive backs. It’s those same characteristics that attracted the Under Armour selection team.

“I just tried to do everything I can and work my butt off to fit every criteria to play in that game,” Samples said. “I’m ready for it.”

Samples is up to 30 offers and is being courted by Texas, Ohio State, Cal, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and a host of other schools.
