Baylor tops for DB Sells -- for now

Speedy safety Taion Sells (Irving, Texas/MacArthur) recently announced a top three of Baylor, West Virginia and Iowa. He also has gone on record to say Baylor currently is his top choice.

Emphasis on the word “currently.”

While Sells, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound defensive back with 4.43-second speed in the 40-yard dash, has said the Bears are the team to beat, he doesn’t want that to discourage other schools to give him a chance. Currently, he has nine offers and is entertaining several programs on the cusp of offering.

“I’m still open; I’m just enjoying all of the offers as they come in,” Sells said. “I look at it as a blessing.”

Sells said Baylor has been his No. 1 choice because it was the first school to take a chance on him. He earned the Baylor offer in January. Since then, he had received offers from Arizona State, Kansas, Houston, Tulsa, Colorado and Indiana, in addition to West Virginia and Iowa.

Sells, however, has his reasons for holding Baylor so high on his list. In addition to the Bears being first to extend a scholarship, he’s built a healthy relationship with his recruiting contact, linebackers coach Jim Gush.

“First of all, [Baylor] is an hour and 15 minutes from my house,” Sells said. “Secondly, I’m really cool with the coaches. I just like the atmosphere around there, and I like the fan base. Some of the people playing there were playing in my same district. I’ve got a lot of chemistry with a lot of the players on the team.

“I like West Virginia and Iowa, too. I remember when Pat White and Steve Slaton were at West Virginia, and they really caught my eye. With Iowa, I like [linebackers coach] coach LeVar Woods a lot. He’s played in the NFL, and we’ve had a good, long talk. Plus, Iowa’s in the Big Ten.

Sells said Minnesota, Iowa State, North Texas and Boise State have expressed heavy interest. He also has received interest from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Sells said he has no set date on when to announce his decision but added he will weigh all options.
