Two-way star Colin Spencer gets first offer

With all the spring accolades Colin Spencer (Dallas/Woodrow Wilson) has received -- Nike SPARQ combine awards, an invitation to The Opening and national attention for his athleticism -- arguably his biggest prize came early Saturday afternoon.

Spencer picked up his first scholarship opportunity this weekend from Kansas, as Jayhawks running backs coach Reggie Mitchell offered the 5-foot-10, 180-pound athlete.

“They had been emailing over the past week saying they were going to have a meeting about me,” Spencer said. “That meeting carried over from [Friday] to [Saturday], and I got the good news. It feels good, I can guarantee that.”

Spencer, a two-way standout for Woodrow at cornerback and receiver, said Kansas is looking to play him in the secondary. His name gained popularity after recording a rating of 141.12 at the Nike SPARQ combine March 3 just outside Houston. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds, ran the 20-yard shuttle in 3.87 seconds and recorded a vertical jump of 41.7 inches.

Spencer said he will make a trip to Lawrence, Kan., and visit the campus Tuesday. He also has looks from Arkansas, TCU, Baylor, SMU, Tulsa and several other schools.

Two weeks ago Spencer received an invitation to The Opening, a four-day training and competition event July 5-8 at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.
