Seven offers for ATH Derrick Mitchell Jr.

ST. LOUIS – Rising athlete Derrick Mitchell Jr. (St. Louis/Vashon) did not compete in Sunday’s Missouri Black & Gold Camp, but he was in attendance watching some of his Vashon teammates. He also said he was there to check out some of his future competition and learn the ways of those players in front of a college coaching audience.

At 6 foot and 180 pounds, Mitchell said his recruiting process has been a good one thus far. He owns offers from Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Memphis, Indiana and Cincinnati, and he also has interest from Miami (Ohio), a team that could be offer No. 8 in the near future.

Mitchell also has interest from Arkansas, Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and a host of other programs. He said he’s being recruited as both a receiver and a cornerback, but he’s hoping to show his talents all over the field.

“It’s not what position I play; it’s how many positions I can play,” Mitchell said. “I’m a versatile player who likes to make big plays. I probably lined up at wide receiver the most, and I’m being recruited as a receiver. I can play cornerback or safety, and I can return kicks and punts.”

Mitchell, who has run the 40 in 4.49 seconds, has lined up at as many as nine positions on offense, defense and special teams for Vashon. He caught 20 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for more than 500 yards and three scores. He passed for more than 800 yards and 10 scores. Defensively, he had 40 tackles and an interception.

Mitchell said he doesn’t have a set date on when he will commit, but he is going to weigh all of his options.

“I want to pick a place not just a place to play football but also to get a good degree,” Mitchell said. “I want to have a chance to play soon once I get there, too.”
