QB Nate German commits to Rice

Rice has found its quarterback for the 2013 recruiting class, as Nate German (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods) gave his verbal commitment to head coach David Bailiff and the Owls on Thursday.

German, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback, split time calling plays with recent Cy Woods graduate Gabriel West during the 2011 season. He accounted for 850 total yards and nine touchdowns for a Cy Woods team that advanced two rounds in the Texas Class 5A Division I playoffs.

German chose Rice over an offer from Southeastern Louisiana and rising interest from TCU, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, UTEP, Iowa State and Arizona State.

“I went to their junior day, and I met with the coaches. I really fell in love with the whole coaching staff,” German said. “They all made me feel really welcomed.

“Throughout the past months they’d been recruiting me, they always made me feel wanted. At the end of the day, that’s what you want. You want to go somewhere you feel wanted. I couldn’t be more excited to play for Coach Bailiff.”

German was recruited by quarterbacks coach Larry Edmondson. He said Rice was a great choice for him not only athletically but scholastically.

“It doesn’t get better then Rice academically in Texas,” German said. “People always say it’s like an Ivy League education. That really attracted me.”
