Three-star offensive lineman Sergio Phillips (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto) has four FBS offers. If all goes well by next Wednesday, he hopes to have a fifth by a BCS power.
Phillips will be in Baton Rouge for LSU’s four-day camp, which runs Sunday through Wednesday. The 6-foot-3, 289-pound lineman – projected to play either guard or center in college – has been in contact with his recruiting contact, LSU tight ends coach Steve Ensminger, and he said an offer is possible with a strong showing at the camp.
“[Ensminger] said to come down to the camp and earn a scholarship,” Phillips said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me.”
If the offer doesn’t come, Phillips still has offers from San Diego State, Memphis, New Mexico State and New Mexico. The latest offer came from New Mexico State last month, but he said he’s heard the most from San Diego State.
“They like how nasty I am when I finish my blocks in my game,” Phillips said of the programs that have offered. “Everything’s kind of in the air right now, but I think I’m going to play center in college. I can play whatever position on the offensive line. I can play defensive tackle, too.”
Phillips said he hopes to make a decision before DeSoto’s two-a-day practices in mid-August. He added that he is considering taking an unofficial visit to San Diego State just before two-a-days.
