La Marque teammates have similar interests

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - La Marque, Texas/La Marque teammates Demun Mercer and Lawrence Montegut are each Division I prospects and both have similar interests when it comes to their future college studies. So it only seems natural that each are receiving interest from some of the same schools.

Mercer, a 2013 athlete who plays quarterback at La Marque, holds two offers currently from Rice and SMU. Rice has offered the 6-2, 180-pounder as a receiver and a wildcat quarterback. So far, Mercer likes the choices he has.

"Those are some good looks to start it off," said Mercer, who carries a 3.66 grade point average and plans to major in petroleum engineering. "I'm really looking into Rice because it's not too far from home. I still can go there, play some football and get a great education. With SMU, I like the Dallas area too so those are two good choices to start off the recruiting process."

Mercer, who along with Montegut participated with the Cougars in the Texas Division II state 7-on-7 championships, has also received interest from Texas Tech, Minnesota and Oregon State. Texas Tech is intriguing to Mercer because a Texas Tech camp and has been hearing from running backs coach Chad Scott.

"I feel like they're a good school too," Mercer said. "They have my engineering. They graduate their players. The football, the atmosphere, I have a few friends that go to Texas Tech and they tell me how the football atmosphere is. Plus they're an Air Raid team so that would be a good look if I went to Texas Tech."

Meanwhile, Texas Tech has already offered Montegut, a 2013 outside linebacker. It is one of six offers the 6-1, 210-pounder holds in addition to Rice, Texas State, McNeese State, Southeastern Louisiana and Arkansas Tech.

Montegut, who also wants to study engineering in college, said he likes both Rice and Texas Tech.

"Those two schools, I like them," he said "They're good. I want to major in engineering technology and they're good on that. I went to their football camps, I like the way they run their camps, I like the way they run their systems and I like the way they run and everything."

Montegut has also attended a Texas Tech junior day. Mercer's college choice could play a role in Montegut's decision as well.

"We're cool, we play football together and we're real cool," Montegut said. "We sat down and talked about our schools and offers and everything. It could play a role because I want to go somewhere where I know somebody and have a good vibe with. If not, I'll be good wherever I go."
