After scoring a road win against Houston two weekends ago in its very first game as an FBS program, Texas State was humbled at home Saturday by Texas Tech.
One player who didn’t look at the 58-10 loss to the Red Raiders sideways is their highest-rated commitment, ESPN 300 receiver Brice Gunter (Stephenville, Texas/Stephenville). The four-star prospect made the trip with teammate and fellow Texas State commit Tyler Jones, as well as their fathers, and said he enjoyed the environment of the FBS’ newest competitor.
“The atmosphere was great,” Gunter said, “and the buzz they talked about was definitely there.”
Gunter made the trip to San Marcos a day after Stephenville defeated defending Texas Class 4A Division II champion Aledo, 41-28, on Friday. He caught eight passes for 73 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Stephenville is 1-1 on the year, its first loss considered an upset to Mexico opponent Monterrey Tech the first week of the season. Gunter has never wavered with Texas State, but he said that loss aided in putting his recruiting and his commitment to the Bobcats in perspective.
“I would hope our game against Monterrey wouldn’t make them [Texas State] change their mind,” he said, “so I’m doing the same.”
The No. 24 receiver in the country and No. 180 player overall, Gunter has an offer from Air Force, but he also has interest from several schools -- including Texas Tech.
