For a few minutes, SMU was the best offer three-star cornerback Will Earley (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) never heard about.
Earley picked up his eighth offer overall Thursday, as SMU put its name in the running for the services of the 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback. Ironically, Earley was one of the last to get the news.
“I didn’t even hear about it. People were coming to me congratulating me, saying ‘I heard SMU offered,’ ” Earley said. “One of the safeties came up and told me. It was a pleasant surprise.”
The offer, confirmed by West Mesquite recruiting coordinator Kyle Ward, is Earley’s third in-state offer, after TCU and North Texas. Earley also has offers from Ole Miss, Colorado, New Mexico, UNLV and Nevada.
Earley has interest from several schools, one of them being Arizona State. He and West Mesquite teammates Dimarya Mixon (Arizona State commit) and Kameron Miles (Tennessee commit) will take an official visit to Tempe, Ariz., to take in the campus Friday and watch the Sun Devils play Utah on Saturday.
Earley added that he’s looking to set up an official visit with New Mexico.
