Fred Lawrence (Abilene, Texas/Cooper) understands that for many, the recruiting process is one that is slow and steady.
So when the 5-foot-10, 170-pound cornerback recently picked up his first offer from Division II McMurry University in Abilene, he was excited to have one under his belt. Lawrence is hoping that scholarship parlays into his first FCS or FBS offer -- and many more after that. He has interest from Colorado State, Louisiana Tech, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas State, Texas Tech and Tulsa.
“The process is going really well,” Lawrence said. “I’m talking to a couple of big-time D-1 schools. They are telling me to keep working hard and playing fast and to continue to get better and stay coachable.”
Lawrence said he doesn’t have any official visits set up at the moment, as he is focused on helping Cooper in its run for a postseason berth. Lawrence, however, did say he has received some invitations to attend home games at several colleges.
As for McMurry, Lawrence said he’s not going to treat the offer as if it’s low-key just because it’s from a Division II school.
“It felt really relieving to finally get my first offer out the way,” he said. “I have been talking to the coaching staff, and I like the way they do things there. They’re very supportive.”
