The playoffs are right around the corner for Mesquite (Texas) Poteet, and 2015 linebacker Malik Jefferson has established himself as a player to watch. No longer is he just the sophomore on the team.
A 6-foot-2, 212-pound outside linebacker, Jefferson has been important in Poteet’s run through the competition. The Pirates are 7-1 and in excellent position for a postseason berth. His play has recently attracted interest from Oklahoma.
“I was excited when I heard from them, then I was kind of surprised,” Jefferson said. “Poteet’s not a big school, and in the past we didn’t get a lot of interest like that. To get it from OU, it’s exciting.
“Honestly, it builds me up. It makes me want to get a lot stronger. I know my teammates rely on me to do my job. You’ve got to play with heart. We’re a family.”
Jefferson is still early in his process, but he said he’s looking not only for a school that has a good football team but one with a solid computer engineering program.
