Javon Jones (Mesquite, Texas/Mesquite) aspires to be the prototype hybrid linebacker/defensive end -- so much that he likes to joke about who his parents are.
“I call D. Ware my daddy, and Von is my stepdaddy,” said Jones, whose favorite pro athletes are linebackers DeMarcus Ware of the Dallas Cowboys and Von Miller of the Denver Broncos.
“I’m a hybrid. I can play low in a four-man front or high in a linebacker position, kind of like DeMarcus and Von.”
Jones has roughly 60 tackles and a team-high 11 sacks on the season, and he’s been a force on a Mesquite defense that is one of the more underrated units in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Memphis has noticed Jones’ play on the field, and the Tigers recently became the first school to offer a scholarship to the 6-foot-3, 200-pound athlete.
“I feel it’s been a long time coming,” Jones said of the offer. “I’ve been talking to them for about three weeks. I feel they are a good program, and they have great people on the team, but they have to put it all together to make a masterpiece.
“It’s fun especially when you get to be a hybrid linebacker. I’m just lost for words and going to keep grinding.”
Jones also has received interest from New Mexico, North Texas, Louisiana-Monroe and Incarnate Word. He’s hoping to visit North Texas soon and possibly set up official visits.
