Big numbers for 2014 QB Destri White

Saturday’s playoff victory against Garland, Texas, most likely will be the new highlight tape of 2014 quarterback Destri White (Mesquite, Texas/Horn).

Everything seemed to go right for White as he led Horn to a 56-35 win in the first round of the Texas Class 5A playoffs. White completed 11 of 14 passes for 286 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 13 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, White led Horn to 543 yards of total offense.

It was the kind of game that ultimately could land White his first scholarship offer. A 6-foot, 176-pound quarterback, White has interest from Oklahoma, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor and Kansas, among others.

“Hopefully I answered some questions,” White said of Saturday’s performance. “Some people think I’m all run and can’t throw the ball. Hopefully this showed my abilities of what I can do. I’ve been working on it for a long time.”

For the season, White has thrown for 1,951 yards and 25 touchdowns. He’s silenced critics who consider him a dual-threat quarterback by completing better than 63 percent of his passes and throwing only three interceptions in 11 games. White, however, shows his athleticism by running, as he’s rushed for 720 yards and eight touchdowns.

Recruiting, White said, has been relatively slow, but he’s hoping to see things pick up soon. He said Texas Tech has been in contact with him the most. He also hears from Oklahoma and TCU regularly.

“I’m just trying to show that I can do it,” White said. “I want to show that while I might be small, I still have the capabilities of being a D-1 quarterback and not just an athlete at the next level.”
