Waters receives special call from Klein

A postscript to today's report on Iowa Western Community College quarterback Jake Waters:

Waters, while on his visit to Kansas State, received a call Saturday night from K-State co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Del Miller minutes after the Heisman Trophy was awarded. Miller, in New York, handed the phone to Collin Klein, who finished third in the Heisman balloting.

“I was really surprised that it was Collin,” Waters said. “He just told me that Kansas State was a great place.”

Not a bad recruiting pitch.

Waters said he visited Sunday with Bill Snyder after the K-State coach returned from New York.

It has been some run the past two months for Waters, who led IWCC to a 12-0 mark and No. 1 final ranking in the NJCAA poll after throwing for 3,501 yards on 73.3-percent passing with 39 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Torn between Kansas State and Penn State, he said he expects a visit Monday at school and home from PSU coach Bill O’Brien.

Miller is scheduled to visit Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Wednesday.

By then, Waters said, he’ll be ready to decide, barring a late move from Alabama or Texas. Both schools contacted Waters last week, though neither has offered a scholarship. He got a visit from Alabama offensive coorindator Doug Nussmeier and a call from UT co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin.

Waters said he expected a visit this week from Harsin.

“I told them I’d obviously be interested,” Waters said. “If they were to offer me a scholarship, I’d be obligated to look at them. It’s Texas, but I’d have to do my homework. I need to find the best situation for me as a junior-college quarterback.”

The same applies to Penn State, at which Waters would never be able to play in a bowl game because of the NCAA sanctions in place until 2016.

“It’s something you want to look at,” he said, “but I’m not going to make my decision solely off that.”

Waters’ father accompanied him on the trip to Manhattan, Kan. The QB said his family is excited to meet O’Brien on Monday.
