Are you a recruit itching to get your name out to college scouts, but don’t know the best way to go about it? We’ll give you a few tips on how to get your name out there as well as answer questions about what Texas’ win over Oklahoma meant for recruits, what percentage we give the Sooners with Joe Mixon, and a Houston tight end’s chances of landing in Austin in this week’s Big 12 recruiting mailbag.
From Hayden Karnos: Frank Iheanacho is a guy who is flying up these recruiting boards. Do you see Texas giving this guy an offer? I know we already have six commits, but this kid is huge and could fill a playmaking tight end role for the Longhorns that we definitely need.
Hayden, don’t forget that in addition to Texas’ six WR commitments in 2014 it also has a commitment from 6-foot-7 tight end John Thomas (Bossier City, La./Trinity Valley CC). I don’t think the Longhorns are in a position to take two tight ends in this class, considering they took Geoff Swaim in 2013. However, if they were going to entertain the idea I’d think Iheanacho would be on their short list. I have a feeling he’ll end up at Texas A&M, though. He’s scheduled to visit College Station this weekend.
From Jon Nemec: How much of a boost did Texas get with the dominant win against OU? Especially with the kids in attendance? I know Solly Thomas, Nick Watkins and some of the best 2015 Texas prospects were there. Had to have been good for Texas.
It was big, no question. But Texas’ success with these kids is going to be determined on how it finishes the season. Typically recruits go into this game knowing, of the two, which they like better. So the outcome of the game isn’t always a big factor. But considering Texas’ struggles with the RRR before this season, you can’t underestimate the importance of this win. If nothing else it keeps the attention span of guys like Thomas, Freeman and Watkins on the Longhorns a lot longer than it may have had UT lost for a fourth consecutive time. Winning cures all. If Texas continues to do it then it should be just fine. Thomas, Freeman, Watkins, Jarrett Stidham, Justin Dunning and several others had great things to say about the win.
From Kevin Fielder: What percentage do you give OU on Joe Mixon?
I’d give the Sooners a 51-percent hance right now, which is pretty high considering all of the schools he is still considering. Mixon likes OU the best right now after his official visit to OU for its game against TCU. But he had a great time at Wisconsin last weekend, too. He has one more official visit to take, which will likely come down to UCLA, Arizona State and Florida State. OU needs to finish the season out strong since Mixon isn’t going to announce until the Army All-American game in January.
From Tobey Whitney: If there is a local HS player not being recruited but has great potential, how can we help him get looked at?
There are a few avenues to pursue here. One is to send your film into our scouting department so it can look the recruit over and give him an evaluation, which college coaches can view. Send a DVD to ESPN Recruiting, 92 Montvale Ave. Suite 4850, Stoneham, Mass., 02180. Two, hit the summer camp circuit as often as possible. The best way to get noticed if you aren’t getting noticed is to outperform others at camp. That will get everyone’s attention. Third, be active in self-promotion. Send your film in to colleges, many of which have a form you can fill out on their school’s website. Be active on Twitter and Facebook as far as messaging coaches. Lastly, ask your high school coach to get in contact with any and all college coaching contacts he knows. Good luck.
From Brandon Bussell: Do you know if juco running back Sheldon Wilson is getting any attention from Big 12 schools?
I know that Oklahoma showed interest his senior season at Anadarko (Okla.) High School when he was already set on going to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College. He clearly has FBS talent and will likely receive interest, if he hasn’t already, if he keeps his grades in check. He rushed for 3,335 yards and set state records with 57 rushing and 64 total touchdowns during his senior season. You don’t find that type of talent everywhere.
