Don’t try convincing ESPNU 150 Watch List cornerback Maurice Smith (Sugar Land, Texas/Dulles) that the number 13 is unlucky. For him, it’s quite the opposite.
Smith picked up an offer from Ole Miss on Tuesday and upped his total offers to 13. The 6-foot, 185-pound junior earned his second offer in as many days, as Vanderbilt offered him Monday.
Smith remembers picking up his first offer from Texas A&M in early January. Since then, the overall excitement of adding to a growing list has yet to fade.
“The first one was a blessing, and it happened so fast. I didn’t feel I’d done enough to get it,” Smith said. “As I get more and more, it feels like the first one all over again every time. God’s blessing me.”
Smith said he was extremely close to verbally committing after picking up that first offer from A&M. He added that he was glad he decided to wait, as he now has the opportunity to weigh multiple options. He has offers from Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and several other programs.
Smith, who is scheduled to participate in Sunday’s Nike Football Training Camp outside Dallas, is coming off a 2011 season in which he was a first-team, all-district selection. With his 4.41 speed in the 40-yard dash, Smith also is expected to be a major contributor for the Dulles track and field team as a sprinter and a member of the sprint relays.
Smith is being recruited at cornerback by the majority of schools interested. Michigan State, which may be close to offering, is interested in using Smith as a receiver. Baylor, which has offered, wants to recruit Smith as an athlete.
