After taking in a productive weekend at SMU, versatile tight end Jeremiah Gaines (Red Oak, Texas) is considering playing college football at the Hilltop.
Gaines is still wide open with his recruiting process, but SMU is one of the schools the 6-foot-2, 235-pound junior has on his radar. Gaines watched SMU’s spring game on Saturday, and he took a visit around the campus with his parents.
“There are a lot of traditions that are interesting to me,” Gaines said of SMU. “The school is all together; it’s not huge. They’re a team that in a couple of years can be a real contender for a championship.
“I really liked it. I can see myself playing for them.”
Gaines is being recruited by SMU defensive line coach Bert Hill. In addition to SMU, Gaines has offers from 10 schools, including TCU, Ole Miss, Tulsa, Purdue and Memphis.
Gaines, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds, can play tight end or line up as a wide receiver. A solid route runner with good hands, Gaines caught 32 passes for 738 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2011 season.
