DE Gaius Vaenuku trims list to six

Defensive end Gaius Vaenuku (Euless, Texas/Trinity) claims more than 30 offers, but he has narrowed his list to six programs.

Vaenuku, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound end, said TCU, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Utah, Hawaii and Missouri have made his final list, and he’s preparing to make visits to the schools. He has already made trips to Oklahoma State and Utah.

Vaenuku has been in regular contact with all six of the schools, but he said Utah has in his ear the most. Coincidentally, Vaenuku’s cousin is 2012 Utah signee and former Trinity standout Hiva Lutui.

“They’re telling me their school is just like Trinity,” Vaenuku said of Utah. “Everybody’s family. There are a lot of Polynesians there, and I’m Polynesian. Plus, the engineering program is great, and that’s what I want to major in.”

Vaenuku said the recruiting process has been progressive, and he’s hoping to receive more even looks after he takes the ACT. Vaenuku has offers from UCLA, Washington, Arizona, Kansas State and Texas Tech, and on Sunday, he picked up an offer from Michigan.

Vaenuku was a first-team, all-district defensive selection for Trinity in 2011. He said he will continue to take his time with the process and make a decision he can stand behind.

“When I commit, it’s going to be over. I’m never going to decommit,” Vaenuku said. “My commitment is pretty much it. To me, that tells your character to the coach. I know some have a good reason for changing their minds, and that’s fine, but for me, I don’t want to say something, then not do it. I’d like to keep my word.”
