State champ Jones still Bobcats solid

ARLINGTON, Texas – There he was -- smile on his face, bleached hair in effect -- celebrating a Texas Class 3A Division I state championship on the Cowboys Stadium turf with his teammates. It was the perfect way for quarterback Tyler Jones (Stephenville, Texas/Stephenville) to go out.

It was also the perfect way for him to prepare for life as a college quarterback. Jones, who has verbally committed to Texas State, put up insane numbers in a 70-35 win against El Campo, Texas. He completed 24 of 31 passes (77.4 percent) for 422 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed 12 times for 126 yards and four touchdowns.

For those without a calculator, Jones accounted for 547 total yards and nine touchdowns. Stephenville as a unit had 621 total yards in the win. He was named the game's offensive MVP for his efforts.

“I really had no idea what was going on stat wise,” Jones said. “I was just trying to put points on the board.”

Following the win, Jones reconfirmed his commitment to Texas State. Bobcats fans were excited throughout the championship matchup, as Jones’ favorite target is four-star wide receiver Brice Gunter, who also has committed to Texas State. El Campo dual-threat quarterback Bryce Brandl, a 1,000-yard rusher for the season, will play baseball for Texas State.

Gunter had nine catches for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Brandl rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns and also completed 8 of 12 passes for 127 yards.

“We’re going to do our thing at Texas State,” said Jones, who is still solid with his commitment. “For me and Brice, we have a legacy to keep going, and that’s why we wanted to go to Texas State. We’ve had a connection since we were 4 or 5 years old.”
